Bioscience firm planning healthy expansion, move to Marana

Tucson‘s fourth-largest private employer has announced it will build a new logistics and distribution center in Marana, with construction slated to begin by the end of 2014. Ventana Medical Systems will be the first tenant in the new Tangerine Commerce Park near I-10 and Tangerine Road. The facility will comprise 60,000 square feet.

The move will bring the company’s logistics center closer to its corporate headquarters in Oro Valley. Around 40 of the company’s 1,100 employees will make the move from the current location near Tucson Boulevard and Valencia Road. The company is planning for “head-count growth” at the new facility, according to a company spokesman, but has not released the number of jobs it expects to add.

As part of the thriving bioscience industry in the Tucson area, Ventana works in the field of tissue-based cancer diagnostics. It has patented more than 400 products, with another 400 patents pending, in the areas of immunohistochemistry, special stains, companion diagnostics and image analysis, among others.

The Marana facility will serve as a product distribution center, along with some assembly functions. Expected opening is in the fourth quarter of 2015.
